Pioneer Era
1903-1919
From Kitty Hawk to the end of the Great War. Twelve seconds of powered flight became a weapon of war in barely a decade. Everything that followed started here.
Historical context
On December 17, 1903, the Wright brothers flew 120 feet at Kitty Hawk. By 1918, fighter pilots were dogfighting at 15,000 feet and bombers were hitting strategic targets. The speed of that evolution is staggering. Aviation went from impossible to decisive military weapon in fifteen years.
