Eras
The history of American aviation and spaceflight
Cold War
1946-1991
Jets, supersonic flight, and the reconnaissance revolution. The Space Race began here. Military budgets funded the most advanced aircraft ever built. Some still hold records today.
Golden Age
1920-1939
The era of barnstormers, record setters, and early airmail. Aviation went from curiosity to industry. Pilots became celebrities, aircraft became beautiful, and the seeds of military aviation were planted.
Modern Classic
1973-2000
The last analog era. Digital fly-by-wire was coming, but these aircraft were still designed with slide rules and built with analog instruments. The F-14, F-15, and Space Shuttle defined the period.
Space Race
1957-1972
From Sputnik to Apollo 17. America went from behind to landing on the Moon in twelve years. The spacecraft, boosters, and support systems represent the peak of American engineering ambition.
World War II
1939-1945
The arsenal of democracy. American manufacturing produced aircraft by the tens of thousands. The technology advanced more in six years than in the previous forty. The machines that emerged defined aviation for a generation.
