World War II

1939-1945

The arsenal of democracy. American manufacturing produced aircraft by the tens of thousands. The technology advanced more in six years than in the previous forty. The machines that emerged defined aviation for a generation.

Historical context

American factories built over 300,000 aircraft during the war. Women entered the workforce as Rosie the Riveters. Fighters evolved from 300 mph to 450 mph. Bombers reached altitudes and ranges previously impossible. The jet age began with the Me 262 and Gloster Meteor. By 1945, the piston engine era was ending.

Defining characteristics

  • Mass production at unprecedented scale
  • High-performance piston engines at their peak
  • Introduction of jet propulsion
  • Pressurized cabins and high-altitude flight
  • Radar and electronic warfare beginnings
