The National Aeronautics and Space Administration coordinated America's space program from Mercury through the Space Shuttle. The agency contracted with private manufacturers but defined the missions and integrated the systems.

Heritage

NASA didn't build spacecraft — North American, Grumman, Boeing, and others did that. But NASA defined what was possible and managed the most complex engineering projects in human history. The Apollo program remains the peak of American technical achievement.
